Opioid addiction.
As West Virginia struggles to deal with the opioid epidemic sweeping across the Mountain State small towns like ours are likewise getting caught up in the issue.
In my high school days most of the available drugs in Tucker County consisted of Marijuana along with a small trickle of other harder drugs. In modern days that trickle has turned into more of a downpour as both harder street drugs and opioid based pharmaceuticals manage to find their way into our area on a daily basis.
I hate seeing anyone go down the path of hardcore drug use in our community yet I've had to watch several do just that over the years and currently know several more fighting a loosing battle against these substances. Over my years in the public eye I've been offered every drug imaginable at one point or another and turned them down flat as I don't need a drug to ruin my life and I know that's exactly what they do.
These drugs lure in users with promises of forgetting pain, providing an escape from reality, or otherwise making things better. The problem with them is they only show you half of the brochure when making the sales pitch and the missing half includes the side effects, negative aspects, and inevitable rock bottom result.
I've watched friends who decided to sell pills go from selling to earn extra money all the way to stealing from friends to support the habit and there's no other outcome to this equation. If you're using I really hope you hit bottom fast enough that you can crawl out before you find out that your entire life has been spent being controlled by a substance that's trying to kill you and without intervention just might one day succeed.
This article isn't like my usual upbeat ones about tourism and pointing out the good in our county, it's one that I hope will help a few on the long list of those who I know are using these substances attempt to get their lives back on track.
Places exist to help you with your addiction such as Celebrate Recovery, Jacob's Ladder, and United Summit Center just to name a few. These programs will introduce you to people who share your background and are choosing to admit their problem and take back their lives from these substances.
Do me a favor, do your friends and family a favor, do your community a favor, and do yourself a favor by taking control of your life back today.
